The purpose of this post is to let you all know that we’ll be closed this Saturday (Feb 25).
“But why?” you whine. “A whole weekend without Voltage? Why would you do this to me?”
Believe me, if we had our druthers, we would be able to be in two places at once. This would really solve a host of problems that tend to arise within the Voltage ecosystem. In fact, if one of you MIT nerds could get busy working on that, it would be great. If you can figure out how we can be in two places at once, I’ll give you free coffee for life.
All this is to say, we’re closing the place for the weekend so we can be somewhere else. New York. That’s right, most of the staff is going to be going down to the Big Apple to cheer for our very own coffee manager, Calen Robinette, as he competes at the NERBC.
The Northeast Regional Barista Competition is as intense as it sounds. Coffee professionals from all over the region will be competing for the honor of qualifying to move onto the nationals, held this year in Portland, OR. During the competition, baristas are given 15 minutes to prepare an espresso, cappuccino, and a signature drink of their own design for each of four sensory judges. It is very stressful and exciting.
The past couple months have filled with very silly moments like this one, when Calen’s pretty cups finally came in:
And things usually get silly when Zoë and myself (and others) stay behind after close to watch his practice sessions and pretend to be judges.
Yep, that’s a pony. Never ask questions about the pony.
So, that’s why we’re going to be closed this weekend. We’re going to be in NYC, celebrating all the hard work Calen has done (he’s really busting his ass). Anyone have any suggestions for places we should hit while we’re there? Perhaps a speakeasy bar or three? Let us know.
Thanks, folks! Please spread the word about this weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday.
xoxo Voltage Staff
