You hear its name. You’ve heard of it, and you know it. If you don’t own one, you immediately think “the grass is always greener on the other side.” However, if you do have one, you’ve probably also thought “no good deed goes unpunished” (more on the latter expression below). This is because the Jura J90 is THE BEST espresso machine in the the Impressa J line. Call it opinion or fact, but Jura says so themselves. Now I’m the type of person that enjoys my coffee, and when hearing something so bold about espresso (no pun intended), I drop everything I’m doing to seek out the truth. And this review is my first shot at it (again, no pun intended). In my opinion, I actually think these puns are funny. However, it’s usually only me. This espresso maker’s designers are pretty much saying “the coffee from our machine tastes better than your coffee.”
Under The Hood of the Jura J90
Pop open the hood (not literally), and you’ll immediately notice that the J9 is, wait for it, Impressa. That’s pun for impressive. The color scheme is sleek and attractive. It has silver and chrome accents that compliment the sturdy gray machine. It is definitely a decorative item on your countertop. I”m not just a comedian, I also dabble in design. Not only is it one of the best looking coffee espresso machines, it brews delicious espresso drinks. You can’t beat freshly brewed coffee beverages right at your home.
The Classic, One Touch “Move” Rule eh?
Do not misunderstand, the J90 One Touch is not about Checkers, it is about Chess. However, don’t confuse Jura’s One Touch “move” with Chess’s (one) Touch-Move Rule (Wikipedia). While this machine can be operated as simply as a checkers piece, its elegance and refinement can be attributed to the intricacy of the design. That makes this machine as complex as a game of Chess with Bobby Fischer. Where is he, by the way?
The full color, TFT display allows for easy to use, straightforward operation and coffee brewing. You literally push the button one time, and this espresso angel brews the cup of your dreams. The finer things in life definitely includes a color display on your espresso machine.
Range of Motion
If you’ve tried as many coffee and espresso machines as I have, you know that most entry and mid level espresso machines never adjust to the cup you’re using. Try jamming your “World’s Greatest Boss” mug underneath the spout of one of those smaller mini espresso machines, and watch what a mess you make. With the J9, the cappuccino spout ACTUALLY ADJUSTS (from around 4 inches to 6 inches). Furthermore, this is exactly what you need to get that latte macchiato looking barista-sexy. And while we’re on the subject of frothing milk, this fine appliance comes with not one, not two, but three bars in the spout. This surgically releases the microfoam into your cup, giving you an extremely even pour. Say goodbye to Starbucks hot milk drink lovers!
No Space (for) Pods?
Alright, I apologize. For some reason I am a little more facetious than usual. But you read correctly, and if you understood the somewhat joke, the Jura One Touch actually has a grinder that grinds coffee. Sort of like the old fashioned way, but not. It can determine whether the coffee you insert is already ground, or not, saving you the trouble of a powdery mess. Moreover, there is power in this hardened steel conical grinder. Six levels of it, to be precise. But no worries, it of course includes an integrated cleaning and rinsing program.
Haste makes Taste
In the eyes of this Swiss made machine and its designers, taste requires quite the opposite. It is understood around the world how in tune the Swiss are with time, and they’ve decided to tell us that the time it takes for this machine to brew your favorite cup takes just the right amount of it. But don’t worry, there’s no “insert pod then wait” game, so when the water is heated, your coffee will brew shortly after the your One Touch “move.” This gives you time to make any adjustments to the amount and temperature of water you want in your cup, or even the strength of your coffee. Of course those are features, am I right?
Lest We Not Forget
Remember earlier about the whole “no good deed” thing? Well, the Impressa Jura J90 is pricey. Not trip-to-the-moon pricey, but definitely my-car-has-air-conditioned-seats pricey. But if you’re a true believer, it will definitely be worth the cost. And Jura stands behind their relatively supportive warranty. Two years or 6000 brews, whichever comes first. If you drink enough coffee, and do enough long division, a cup of coffee will still end up cheaper (and tastier) than from the corner cafe. Sadly, there is one tiny single thing I have to whine about. Personally, I go milkless in my coffee. However, there are days when I dabble with the dark side (last quip, I swear). Furthermore, while it’s called a “feature” (the FrothXpress Plus System), it is basically another way of saying it doesn’t let you control the amount of froth in your cup. Which means, if you want just a dabble, you’re literally going to have to pull your cup out. While finding some way to take care of the spillage. Not a deal breaker because, I’m not a milk person.
Bottom Line in regards to this Jura J90 One Touch Review
Power suit, power tie, power steering. If that sounds like you, or even if you’re the exact opposite, so long as you really, REALLY love all things coffee and espresso. This single touch bad boy is the machine for you. For most, it will set you back a pretty penny, but for all, you get a pretty machine, and a great cup of coffee. All things considered, this is one of the best espresso machines by Jura. Additionally, it is among the elite compared to best espresso machines in general.
